As many of you know, Prevail Inc. is one of the key organizations we support in our community — but what you may not know is why we choose to be as involved as we are.
At Uplift Intimate Apparel, we believe that beauty and purpose go hand in hand, and our partnership with Prevail is one of the most important ones we have — because it isn’t with a brand, it’s with people whose lives are being changed every single day.
We believe in what they are doing. We believe it is necessary. And we believe that good must prevail over evil. Prevail isn’t only there for those in crisis — they are working just as hard to educate and empower people to recognize the warning signs of danger, to understand when they are in a dangerous situation, and to know what to do. Education is key, and we are 100% behind everything they stand for.
Prevail’s work centers on supporting adults, teens, and children who have experienced trauma from domestic violence or sexual abuse and assault. They do this through four key areas:
1. ADVOCACY—
Empowering victims on their path to healing while engaging the broader community around safe, healthy relationships.
2. SUPPORT SERVICES—
Crisis intervention and comprehensive care, always free and always confidential, in collaboration with hospitals, schools, and law enforcement.
3. HOUSING SERVICES—
Working directly with those who need safe housing options.
4. PREVENTION—
Focus on how our community can move from reacting to violence to stopping it from ever happening. Domestic and sexual violence is a public health issue that can be prevented through environmental, social, and systematic change.
Until you’ve heard a survivor’s journey, it’s hard to comprehend the horror that exists. Recently, I’ve heard two different survivors share some of their story and the life-saving impact Prevail has had on their lives. I wonder sometimes if we become desensitized to some of the horrors that are depicted in movies and the news. Perhaps on some level we think this can’t be real. Sadly, it is real; even in our own community.
Throughout the year we have been involved in many of their fundraising efforts and have created opportunities to further those efforts through Uplift Intimate Apparel. I would love nothing more than to support Prevail so well they no longer exist. However, I don’t see that happening anytime soon.
Prevail’s Primary Prevention programs are making a difference. Healthy Relationships Education are school-based programs that help teens develop skills to empower them to make smart relationship choices and to understand unhealthy and risky behaviors. Topics that are covered include:
- Warning Signs
- Types of Abuse
- The Cycle of Violence
- The Relationship Spectrum
- Consent and boundaries
- How to get help and how to help a friend.
- And Teen Dating Violence Awareness (TDVAM) including their Toolkit.
